Wrocław for newcomers
Wrocław, the capital of Lower Silesia, sits on the Oder river and is spread across islands linked by more than a hundred bridges. It has a large student population, with the University of Wrocław and the Wrocław University of Science and Technology among its institutions, and has become one of Poland’s leading destinations for IT, engineering and business-services companies. Many of their employees come from abroad, so English is common in the workplace and in central bars.
The city has a relaxed, young and slightly bohemian atmosphere, and locals are proud of it. Visitors quickly notice the small bronze dwarfs scattered all over the centre: hunting for them is a lighthearted way to explore the city on a date.

Where to go in Wrocław
The Market Square (Rynek), one of the largest in Poland, and the adjoining Plac Solny are the centre of city life, with bars and restaurants in every building. For something less touristy, the Nadodrze district has become a creative area with small cafés and bars, and Włodkowica Street, in the so-called Four Denominations District, is lined with bars and restaurants.
Ostrów Tumski, the old cathedral island, is magical in the evening, when the gas lamps are lit, and makes a lovely walk after dinner. In summer, Wyspa Słodowa (Słodowa Island) is the student hangout of choice, with people picnicking on the grass by the river. Szczytnicki Park and the Japanese Garden near the Centennial Hall are good for a daytime date, and the multimedia fountain next to the hall draws crowds on summer evenings.
Language exchanges, Meetup groups and university clubs are active and welcoming to newcomers, and many international employers run sports and social clubs.
Respect and safety
Wrocław is generally safe and easygoing. Poles often appreciate a little old-fashioned courtesy on dates, and clear intentions. Meet in public for the first date, keep personal details private until you know the person, and never send money to a match.
