Gdynia, the modern side of the Tricity
Gdynia is the youngest of the three Tricity cities: it grew from a fishing village into a major port in the 1920s and 1930s, and its centre is one of the best collections of modernist architecture in Europe. Today it is a city of the sea, with a busy port, shipping and maritime companies, the Gdynia Maritime University and the Polish Naval Academy, and a seafront that locals use every day.
It is calmer and more residential than Gdańsk or Sopot, and many people who work across the Tricity choose to live here. English is common among younger people and in maritime and IT circles. For dating, Gdynia is best thought of as one part of the Tricity: Sopot is a few minutes away by the SKM suburban train, and Gdańsk is a short ride further.

By the sea: where to meet
Kościuszko Square (Skwer Kościuszki) and the pier beyond it are the centre of Gdynia’s seafront, with the museum ships moored nearby and cafés and restaurants around. Świętojańska Street, the main shopping street, is lined with modernist buildings, bars and restaurants. The seaside promenade runs from the city beach towards Redłowo and Orłowo.
Orłowo is a favourite for dates: a small pier, a cliff overlooking the bay and a beach that is lovely at sunset. Kamienna Góra, a hill above the centre, offers views over the port and the sea. Every summer, the Open’er Festival, held near Gdynia, brings a big international crowd to the area. Sailing clubs, running groups along the coast and Tricity Meetup groups are other good ways to meet people, and Sopot’s bars are only a short train ride away.
Dating etiquette and safety
People in Gdynia are often described as relaxed and practical. Courtesy and a clear plan for your date are appreciated. Meet in public first, take the SKM or a licensed taxi home, and never send money to someone you met online.
