A university city in the east
Lublin is the largest Polish city east of the Vistula and one of the country’s most important academic centres. Maria Curie-Skłodowska University (UMCS), the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin (KUL), the Medical University of Lublin, the University of Life Sciences and the Lublin University of Technology together bring in a large student population. The Medical University in particular teaches many international students in English, so you will hear English in student areas and cafés.
The city has a beautiful, slightly faded old town on a hill, with the castle just beyond it, and a laid-back pace. Life is cheaper than in Warsaw or Kraków, and people are known for being warm and welcoming. Outside the student and international community, though, Polish is the everyday language.

Old town, student bars and the reservoir
The Old Town, entered through the Kraków Gate, is full of cafés, wine bars and restaurants in historic cellars, and its narrow streets are atmospheric at night. Krakowskie Przedmieście, the main pedestrian street, links the old town to the newer centre, and Plac Litewski, with its fountains, is a natural meeting point on summer evenings.
The Saxon Garden (Ogród Saski) is the classic park for a walk, and Zemborzycki Reservoir, on the southern edge of the city, is popular for cycling, sailing and summer afternoons by the water. Student life revolves around the academic district near UMCS and KUL, with plenty of affordable bars. The universities’ international student organisations run events, trips and language exchanges that are open to Polish students.
Things to keep in mind
- Lublin is a bit more traditional than the big western cities: politeness and clear intentions go a long way.
- Many international students date mainly within their own community; a few words of Polish help you meet locals.
- Meet in public, tell a friend your plans, and never send money to someone you met online.
