From factories to lofts
Łódź (pronounced roughly “woodge”) grew rich on textiles in the nineteenth century, and its industrial heritage defines the city. Vast red-brick mills have been turned into lofts, offices and leisure centres, most famously Manufaktura, a former cotton factory complex that is now one of the city’s main meeting places. Piotrkowska Street, one of the longest commercial streets in Europe, runs straight through the centre and is lined with bars and restaurants.
The city is also known for film: the National Film School in Łódź has trained many of Poland’s best-known directors. Together with the University of Łódź, Lodz University of Technology and a medical university with programmes in English, it gives the city a large student population. Business-services centres and logistics companies have brought international employees too. Łódź is less polished than Kraków or Warsaw, and many locals like it that way: it is creative, affordable and unpretentious.
What works for dating in Łódź
For most English speakers, the free apps come first. Tinder, Bumble and Badoo work in English and offer free chat with matches. Warsaw is only around an hour and a half away by train, so some people widen their search when they are open to travelling.

Piotrkowska, OFF and Manufaktura
Piotrkowska Street is the backbone of Łódź nightlife, and on summer evenings its terraces fill up. Just off it, OFF Piotrkowska, a former cotton mill, is a cluster of bars, restaurants and design shops in an industrial courtyard, popular with a young, creative crowd. Manufaktura combines a huge square with restaurants, a museum of art and a cinema, which makes it practical for a first date where you can choose what to do next.
EC1, a former power station turned science and culture centre, is a good daytime option. For walks, the city has large parks, such as Łagiewniki Forest, one of the largest urban forests in Europe, and Źródliska Park near the centre. Students meet through the universities’ clubs and film societies, and there are language exchanges and Meetup groups for newcomers.
A few tips
- Łódź people are proud of their city’s comeback, so curiosity about its history is a good conversation starter.
- Prices are lower than in Warsaw, so dinner and drinks are easy on the budget.
- Meet in public places for a first date, tell a friend, and never send money to a match.
