Students, Brabant hospitality and a former railway yard
Tilburg used to be a textile city; today it is best known for Tilburg University, which offers many bachelor’s and master’s programmes in English and attracts students from across Europe and beyond, and for Fontys, the large university of applied sciences. The old railway workshops of the Spoorzone have been turned into a cultural and creative district, with the LocHal library as its showpiece.
As in the rest of Brabant, people here are known for being sociable and down to earth: the Brabant idea of “gezelligheid” is very present in bars and at the city’s big events. English is widely understood, especially among students, so dating as a newcomer is easier than you might think, even if Dutch helps you go beyond the campus crowd.
Which platform for what
The dating sites in our Netherlands ranking run in Dutch, but because almost everyone in the Netherlands speaks English, many members will happily switch languages:
- Lexa: the top choice for serious relationships between 25 and 59. Profile, browsing and likes are free; messaging is paid.
- Parship: long-term relationships from 30, with a personality test and match suggestions; seeing photos and messaging are paid.
- Ourtime: for singles over 50.
- Sexbook: the casual option in our ranking, for 25 to 50, with chat paid by credits.
Students mostly use the free apps: Tinder and Bumble with free chat after a match, and Hinge, whose limited daily likes encourage more thoughtful conversations.
Where people meet in Tilburg
The Korte Heuvel and the Heuvel square, near the main church, are lined with terraces and are the centre of evening life. The Piushaven, a former harbour on the south side of the centre, has bars and restaurants on the water and is a favourite for a first drink on a summer evening. In the Spoorzone, the LocHal and the surrounding venues host events, and the 013 concert hall is one of the best-known music venues in the south of the country.
Every July, the Tilburgse Kermis fills the centre with one of the largest funfairs in the Benelux. Carnival, when Tilburg becomes “Kruikenstad”, is the other big moment of the year. For quieter dates, the Reeshof woods, the Oisterwijkse Vennen nature area nearby and the Efteling theme park in Kaatsheuvel make good outings.
Offline, the university’s student and sports associations, the international student network and language cafés are the easiest ways to meet people.
Etiquette and safety
Dutch dating is direct and egalitarian: splitting the bill is normal, and people say clearly whether they are interested. Many dates happen by bike, so a café in the centre followed by a ride along the Piushaven works well. Meet in public, tell someone your plans and never send money to a match.
