A green city on the Rhine
Arnhem, capital of Gelderland, is surrounded by nature: the forests and heaths of the Veluwe start at the edge of town, and the Hoge Veluwe National Park, with the Kröller-Müller Museum, is a short ride away. History is everywhere too: the John Frost Bridge recalls the Battle of Arnhem in 1944, and many visitors come for the war memorials.
The city has a creative streak thanks to ArtEZ, the art and design school, and to the Modekwartier, the fashion quarter in Klarendal. The HAN University of Applied Sciences brings students, and energy and engineering companies have offices here. English is spoken widely, as in most Dutch cities, though Arnhem is less expat-heavy than Amsterdam or Utrecht.

Korenmarkt, Klarendal and Sonsbeek
The Korenmarkt is Arnhem’s nightlife square, with bars and clubs close together. For something calmer, the terraces along the Rijnkade by the river are pleasant on a summer evening. In Klarendal, the Modekwartier has independent shops, ateliers and cafés, ideal for a creative date.
Park Sonsbeek, right next to the centre, is one of the most beautiful city parks in the country, with hills, ponds and a watermill. Burgers’ Zoo and the Netherlands Open Air Museum are classic day outings, and a bike ride into the Veluwe or a visit to the Kröller-Müller Museum make memorable second dates.
Offline, cycling and running clubs, hiking groups in the Veluwe and the student associations of ArtEZ and HAN are good ways to meet people.
