A small, historic city on the IJssel
Deventer is one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands, with a centre full of medieval and Hanseatic buildings. The Brink is its main square, and the Bergkwartier, a restored old neighbourhood with narrow streets, is one of the most charming corners of the country. Saxion University of Applied Sciences has a campus here and attracts international students, especially from Germany.
Deventer is compact and calm. The dating pool is smaller than in a big city, and many people combine Deventer with Apeldoorn or Zwolle on the apps. English is widely understood.
Which platform for what
As in the rest of the country, the sites in our Netherlands ranking are in Dutch:
- Lexa for a serious relationship, 25 to 59.
- Ourtime for over-50s.
- Parship for long-term matching from 30, using a personality test.
- Sexbook for casual dating, with chat by credits.
Tinder, Bumble and Hinge all offer free chat. In a small city, a slightly wider radius makes a real difference.
The Brink, the Bergkwartier and the river
The Brink is lined with cafés and terraces and is the natural meeting point, day and night. The Bergkwartier, around the Bergkerk, has small shops and cafés and is lovely for a stroll. Along the IJssel, the riverbank offers views and walks, and a small ferry crosses to the other side in summer.
Deventer’s big events are the Deventer Boekenmarkt, a huge open-air book market along the IJssel every August, and the Dickens Festijn in December, when the Bergkwartier is filled with characters in Victorian costume. Both draw large crowds and are fun to visit together.
To meet people offline, Saxion’s student associations, sports clubs, choirs and volunteering are the usual ways in. Both big festivals rely on many volunteers, and signing up for a shift is a surprisingly effective way to get to know locals.
For a day out, the countryside of Salland and the Sallandse Heuvelrug hills are a short bike ride away, and Zutphen, another Hanseatic town, is a pleasant train trip along the IJssel. Combining a walk with a pancake or a coffee in a village café is a very Dutch way to spend a second date.
Tips for Deventer
People here are friendly but value directness and reliability. Splitting the bill is normal. A coffee on the Brink and a walk along the IJssel is the classic first date. Meet in public, let someone know your plans and never send money to someone you met online.
