Canals, scholars and scientists
Leiden University, founded in 1575, is the oldest in the country, and it still defines the city: students, researchers and lecturers from all over the world live in the historic centre and around the Bio Science Park, home to biotech companies and to the Leiden University Medical Center. The European Space Agency’s technical centre in nearby Noordwijk adds engineers and scientists of many nationalities.
Leiden is compact and very walkable, with canals such as the Rapenburg and the Nieuwe Rijn. English is spoken effortlessly, and international couples are common. The flip side: it is a small city where academic circles overlap, so discretion is appreciated.
Sites and apps
The services in our Netherlands ranking are in Dutch, but you can write in English and many members will answer:
- Lexa for a serious relationship between 25 and 59, with free profile, browsing and likes.
- Parship for long-term matching from 30, through a personality test.
- Ourtime for over-50s.
- Sexbook for casual dating, 25 to 50, with chat on credits.
Tinder, Bumble and Hinge are all widely used by students and young researchers, and all three offer free chat with matches. With so many people in Leiden for a few years only, being clear about your plans saves time.
From the Nieuwe Rijn to the beach
Twice a week, the market along the Nieuwe Rijn fills the centre with stalls, and the terraces nearby are where Leiden meets for coffee. The Beestenmarkt and the streets around the Haarlemmerstraat have plenty of bars and cafés, and the student associations make the city lively on weeknights. The Burcht, a medieval mound fortress in the centre, offers a view over the rooftops and is a lovely spot for a short walk.
The Hortus botanicus, one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world, is perfect for a calm first meeting, and museums such as Naturalis and the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden suit rainy days. A short bike ride takes you to the beaches of Katwijk and Noordwijk, through the dunes.
On 3 October, the city celebrates Leidens Ontzet, the relief of the siege of 1574, with a big street party. Sports clubs, rowing on the canals and the university’s international networks are good ways to meet people year-round.
Good to know
Leideners are direct but polite; asking someone out for a coffee after a few messages is normal. Splitting the bill is standard. A canal-boat ride or a walk along the Singel park is a typical, low-cost date. Meet in public, keep personal details private until you trust someone and never send money to a match.
