Temuco and the Araucanía
Temuco is the capital of the Araucanía region, in the green south of Chile. It is a regional hub for commerce, health care and education, and the starting point for trips to the lakes and volcanoes around Villarrica and Pucón. The region is also the heartland of the Mapuche, Chile’s largest indigenous people, whose culture, language and crafts are very present in the city’s markets and daily life.
Temuco is not a big expat destination, and English is not widely spoken, so newcomers who arrive for work, research or study usually date in Spanish. In return, people tend to be welcoming and curious about visitors. Two large universities, the Universidad de La Frontera (UFRO) and the Universidad Católica de Temuco, bring thousands of students and keep the city younger than its quiet reputation suggests.

Where to meet people in Temuco
Cerro Ñielol, a forested hill and natural monument right next to the city, is perfect for a walk and has a viewpoint over Temuco; it is also a place of historical importance for the Mapuche. The Feria Pinto, the big open-air market, is full of local produce, food stalls and crafts, and is a very local experience.
The centre around the Plaza Aníbal Pinto has cafés and shops, and the area of Avenida Alemania is where many of the city’s bars and restaurants are found. Students tend to go out near the universities. In summer, the lakes are the place to be: Villarrica and Pucón, about an hour and a half away, offer beaches, hot springs and volcano views, and make a great weekend trip.
University events, hiking and climbing groups, choirs and cultural centres are good ways to meet people. Learning a little about Mapuche culture is appreciated and makes for interesting conversations.
Safety and etiquette
People in Temuco can be reserved at first, so patience goes a long way. It rains a lot, so always have an indoor alternative for your date. Meet in public, use app-based rides or taxis at night and never send money to someone you met online.
