Conce: students, rock and the Biobío
Concepción, called Conce by Chileans, is the capital of the Biobío region and the centre of one of the country’s largest metropolitan areas, together with Talcahuano, San Pedro de la Paz and neighbouring towns. The Biobío River flows past the city on its way to the Pacific, and the port and industrial area around Talcahuano have long been the economic engine of the region.
More than anything, Conce is a university city. The Universidad de Concepción, with its large campus and its landmark Campanil tower, is one of the oldest and best-known in Chile, and several other universities add to the student population. The city also has a reputation as Chile’s capital of rock, with many well-known bands coming from here. The atmosphere is young, unpretentious and a little rebellious, and English is less common than in Santiago, so some Spanish is a real advantage.
Choosing the right site
The services in our Chile ranking are in Spanish. In Concepción, where most people date in Spanish, they are a good way to meet locals rather than other foreigners.
- Solteros con Nivel (Academic Singles): for graduates and academics, which suits a university city.
- be2: long-term dating based on a personality test.
- Amor40 (40sDating): for singles in their forties.
- Solteros50 (Singles50) and NuevoAmor50 (50sDating): for over-50s; Amor60 (60sDating) for over-60s.
- Fuego de Vida: general dating.
Tinder, Bumble and Badoo are free and very popular with students. Badoo, with its interface in English and Spanish, is a practical bridge if your Spanish is still basic.
Where penquistas socialise
People from Concepción are called penquistas. The university campus itself, with its gardens, art and the famous mural at the Casa del Arte, is a pleasant place for a walk. Downtown, the streets around the Plaza de la Independencia and Barrio Estación have bars and cafés, and live music venues are a big part of nightlife, in keeping with the city’s rock reputation.
Parque Ecuador and the trails on Cerro Caracol are popular for walks and runs with views over the city. Laguna Chica and Laguna Grande in San Pedro de la Paz are good for a sunny afternoon, and the coast around Tomé, Dichato or Penco is a short trip away.
Concerts, university sports, hiking groups and language exchanges are good ways to meet people. Because winters are long and rainy, many friendships are made indoors, in cafés, bars and at friends’ homes.
Etiquette and safety
Penquistas are friendly and relaxed, though often reserved with strangers at first. Take your time, be genuine and show interest in local music and culture. Meet first dates in public places, use app-based rides at night and never send money to someone you have only met online.
