Sun, sea and desert
Iquique, capital of the Tarapacá region, sits on a narrow strip of land between the Pacific and a huge coastal cliff, with the sand dune of Cerro Dragón rising behind the city. Sunny almost all year, it is one of Chile’s favourite beach destinations and a well-known surf spot. Its economy relies on mining, the port and the ZOFRI duty-free zone, which draws shoppers and traders from Chile and neighbouring countries.
The city has a long history as a nitrate port, and the wooden houses on Calle Baquedano recall its prosperous past. Today Iquique is a mix of locals, mining workers on rotation and immigrants from Peru, Bolivia, Colombia and elsewhere, which makes it one of the more multicultural cities in Chile. English is not widely spoken outside tourism and mining offices.

Where to meet people in Iquique
Playa Cavancha is the city’s main beach, with a long promenade, restaurants and bars, and it is the obvious place for a first walk or a drink at sunset. Playa Brava, with stronger waves, is popular with surfers and bodyboarders.
The historic centre, around the Plaza Prat with its clock tower and the old theatre, and the boardwalk of Calle Baquedano, lined with old wooden houses, are pleasant for an evening stroll. For something more adventurous, paragliding from the cliffs above the city is one of Iquique’s signature activities.
A day trip to the abandoned nitrate towns of Humberstone and Santa Laura, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, or to the oasis of Pica, famous for its fruit and hot springs, is a memorable outing. Surf schools, running and cycling groups along the coast, and gyms are good places to meet people with an active lifestyle.
Safety tips
Meet in public, busy places such as Cavancha, keep valuables out of sight on the beach and use radio taxis or app-based rides at night. Be careful with anyone who quickly asks for money or help with goods from the free zone, and never send money to someone you have not met.
