A booming city with a colonial heart
Santiago de Querétaro has become one of the fastest-growing cities in Mexico. Its historic centre, listed by UNESCO, is full of plazas, churches and pedestrian streets, while the outskirts are home to industrial parks and a well-known aerospace cluster, with international manufacturers and suppliers. Many families and young professionals have moved here from Mexico City in search of a calmer life, and international engineers and managers arrive with the factories.
Queretanos are often described as polite, family-focused and fairly conservative, but the influx of newcomers has made the city more open and mixed. Dating tends to be steady rather than wild: people like a good dinner, a walk in the centre and, before long, meeting each other’s friends.
Which platform for what
The sites in our Mexico ranking are in Spanish. In Querétaro’s engineering and corporate circles English is common, but most locals will be more comfortable writing in Spanish.
- Solteros con Nivel (Academic Singles): made for graduates and professionals, which fits much of Querétaro’s newcomer population.
- be2: personality-based matching for a lasting relationship.
- Solteros 50 (Singles50): for over-50s, including people who retired here or near San Miguel de Allende.
- Amigovios and ContactosRapidos: for casual dating.
Tinder, Bumble and Badoo are free for matching and chat and popular with students from the Universidad Autónoma de Querétaro and the city’s Tec de Monterrey campus.
Where to meet people
The historic centre is the city’s living room. Jardín Zenea and the Plaza de Armas are surrounded by restaurants and cafés, and the pedestrian streets around them are lively every evening. The aqueduct and the viewpoint near it are a classic spot for a walk. Bars and terraces along Andador 5 de Mayo and nearby streets fill up at weekends.
Juriquilla, in the north, is a modern area with shopping centres, restaurants and many young families and professionals. For a day out, the region’s wine and cheese route, with vineyards around Tequisquiapan and Ezequiel Montes, and the giant rock of Peña de Bernal are hugely popular weekend trips.
Cycling and running groups, professional associations in the industrial sector, language exchanges and university activities are other good ways to build a social circle in a city where many people are new too.
Staying safe
Querétaro has a reputation as one of the calmer large cities in Mexico, but common sense still applies: meet in public, arrange your own transport, tell a friend where you are going and never send money to a match you have not met in person.
