Vallarta’s dating scene in a nutshell
Puerto Vallarta sits on the Bay of Banderas, with the Sierra Madre rising straight behind the town. For decades it has drawn Americans and Canadians, first as tourists, then as snowbirds spending the winter, and more and more as permanent residents. English is everywhere in the tourist areas, and the town has a strong community of retirees, remote workers and people running small businesses.
That gives Vallarta a very particular dating scene: relaxed, sociable and seasonal. The population swells from roughly November to April and quietens down over the hot, humid summer. Many friendships and relationships start in the winter season, and some people only date while they are in town.
Puerto Vallarta is also known as one of the most LGBTQ+-friendly destinations in Mexico, with an established gay scene centred on the Zona Romántica.
Which platform for what
The services in our Mexico ranking are Mexican sites in Spanish. They are ideal if you want to meet vallartenses rather than other visitors.
- Over 50: Solteros 50 (Singles50), and Amor50 (50sDating), suit the many retirees who live here part or all of the year.
- A relationship based on compatibility: be2, with its personality test.
- Professionals: Solteros con Nivel (Academic Singles), for educated singles looking for something serious.
- Casual: Amigovios and ContactosRapidos.
Free apps bring in both locals and visitors. Tinder, Bumble and Badoo let you chat for free, and in peak season you will see far more English-speaking profiles than in summer.
Where to meet people in Puerto Vallarta
The Malecón, the seafront promenade with its sculptures, is the natural meeting point: people stroll it every evening to watch the sunset. South of the Río Cuale, the Zona Romántica (Old Town) is packed with restaurants, beach clubs and bars, and Playa Los Muertos with its pier is the busiest beach in town.
To the north, Marina Vallarta is quieter, with restaurants around the harbour, and the coast of Riviera Nayarit, from Bucerías to Sayulita, is popular for day trips. Hiking the trails to the beaches south of town, yoga classes, Spanish lessons and volunteer work with local organisations are all good ways to meet people who share your interests. Expat groups organise regular social events during the winter.
Safety and good manners
Vallarta is generally relaxed, but the usual rules apply: meet in public, arrange your own transport and do not drink more than you can manage on a first date. Romance scams targeting older, well-off foreigners exist everywhere, so be cautious with anyone who quickly brings up money problems. Never send money to someone you have not met.
Which site fits you in Puerto Vallarta?
In Vallarta, whether you are here for the season or for good makes a big difference. Four examples:
Linda, 62, retired nurse from Calgary who spends winters in the Zona Romántica
She wants a companion for dinners and day trips. Solteros 50 (Singles50) introduces her to local over-50s. Free tip: the sunset walk on the Malecón is a classic, free first date.
Andrés, 35, chef at a restaurant in the Old Town
He works late and wants something stable. be2 lets him browse at his own pace. Free tip: a morning coffee near Los Muertos pier works around restaurant hours.
Tom, 44, freelance photographer living in Versalles
He has lived here for three years and wants to meet people beyond the expat bubble. Badoo and Bumble are free and show him locals nearby. Free tip: a Spanish class or language exchange quickly widens your circle.
Gabriela, 30, hotel sales coordinator in Marina Vallarta
She wants someone educated and settled. Solteros con Nivel (Academic Singles) fits. Free tip: dinner by the marina is calmer than the busy Old Town on a weekend.
