A port city rebuilt in concrete
Le Havre was largely destroyed in 1944 and rebuilt by the architect Auguste Perret; his centre, with the soaring Saint-Joseph church, is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is one of France’s main container ports, and shipping, logistics and industry employ a large share of the population.
The city also has a surprising international academic side: a Sciences Po campus focused on Europe and Asia teaches largely in English, EM Normandie has a campus here, and the Université Le Havre Normandie and the national maritime school complete the picture. Add the Brittany Ferries route to Portsmouth, and you get a city with more English speakers than you might expect, though French remains the everyday language.
Which site to use
The serious sites in our France ranking are French-language:
- Meetic for serious relationships between 25 and 49.
- DisonsDemain for over-50s.
- eDarling for long-term matching after 40, through a free personality test.
- DateMyAge if you prefer English, for over-40s.
The free apps, Tinder, Bumble and Hinge, cover the student and young professional crowd, and happn is useful around the centre and the beach promenade.
Saint-François, the beach and the docks
The Saint-François quarter, between the fishing port and the commercial basins, is the old part of the city that survived the war, with bars and seafood restaurants. The beach, a long pebble strip lined with colourful huts in summer, has bars and cafés facing the sea and is lovely at sunset.
The MuMa, the André Malraux modern art museum, holds one of France’s largest collections of Impressionist paintings and sits by the harbour entrance: a calm, cultural date. The Docks Vauban, former warehouses turned into shops and restaurants, are good on a rainy day. Above the city, Sainte-Adresse offers views over the estuary, and the cliffs of Étretat are a short drive away for a weekend walk.
Offline, the student associations of Sciences Po and EM Normandie, sailing and kitesurfing clubs, and the football crowd at Le Havre AC are all ways to meet people.
Advice for Le Havre
Havrais have a reputation for being straightforward, without Parisian airs. Weather changes fast on the Channel, so plan an indoor alternative. If you commute or travel by ferry, be honest about where you are based. Meet in public, let someone know your plans and never send money to a match.
