Wine, mustard and students
Dijon was the seat of the Dukes of Burgundy, and its medieval and Renaissance centre is listed by UNESCO as part of the “Climats” of Burgundy. It is a city where food and wine are taken seriously: the Côte de Nuits vineyards start just south of town, and the Cité internationale de la gastronomie et du vin opened a few years ago near the centre.
The Université de Bourgogne, Burgundy School of Business and a Sciences Po campus focused on Central and Eastern Europe give the city a sizeable student population, including international students. Outside the campuses, Dijon is a calm, comfortable city where most socialising happens in French and around a table.

Rue Berbisey, Les Halles and Lac Kir
Rue Berbisey is the city’s best-known street for bars and small restaurants, popular with students and young professionals. Place François Rude and Place de la Libération, in front of the Palace of the Dukes, are where people meet for a drink in the sun. Around Les Halles, the covered market, wine bars and bistros make an ideal setting for a dinner date.
A walk along the Parcours de la Chouette, the owl trail marked in the pavement, is a playful way to see the old town together. Lac Kir, just west of the city, is the place for a summer swim, a run or a lakeside walk, and the Jardin de l’Arquebuse is free and calm.
Wine-tasting courses, cooking classes and the university’s sports clubs are good ways to meet people offline. Student associations organise welcome events for internationals every autumn.
Advice for dating in Dijon
Burgundians appreciate good food and good conversation; a well-chosen bistro beats a fancy cocktail bar. If a date suggests a wine tasting in the vineyards, plan transport in advance, because driving after tastings is not an option. Meet in a public place first and never send money to someone you only know online.
