Nitra in brief
Nitra, in western Slovakia, is one of the oldest cities in the country, with a history going back to the Great Moravian period. Its castle and cathedral sit on a hill above the old town, and Zobor hill rises behind the city. Two universities, Constantine the Philosopher University and the Slovak University of Agriculture, give Nitra a large student population, and the Jaguar Land Rover plant, opened in 2018, has brought new jobs and some international employees.
Nitra is about an hour from Bratislava, close enough for weekend trips but far enough to have its own rhythm. It feels like a student town in term time and a quiet regional city in summer. English is spoken by many students and younger professionals; outside those circles, Slovak is the norm.

Where to meet people
The pedestrian zone of Štefánikova trieda and Svätoplukovo námestie, the square in front of the theatre, are the centre of city life, with cafés and bars. The Upper Town (Horné mesto), on the way up to the castle, is quieter and atmospheric in the evening. The Agrokomplex exhibition grounds host fairs and events through the year.
For outdoor dates, Zobor hill offers hiking trails and views over the Danube lowlands, and the park along the Nitra river is pleasant for a walk or a bike ride. The region is also wine country, with vineyards around the city, so a wine tasting is a natural date idea. Students meet through university clubs, sports and the international student network.
