A university town first and foremost
Coimbra is defined by its university. Founded in the thirteenth century and moved to the city in the sixteenth, the Universidade de Coimbra sits on top of the hill, and student life sets the rhythm below it. Black capes (the traditional academic dress), student fado and the repúblicas, communal student houses with long traditions, are part of everyday life.
The university also attracts many Erasmus and Brazilian students, so the city is more international than its size suggests. Outside academia, Coimbra is a calm regional centre with a large hospital and medical sector, which brings in doctors and researchers from abroad.
Which platform for which goal
See our Portugal ranking for the full comparison. For Coimbra:
- Students and under-30s: Tinder, Bumble and Badoo, all free to match and chat. Busy in term time, much quieter in August.
- Something serious: Meetic is our top pick; be2 suits people who like personality-based matching. Both are in Portuguese and free to join.
- Casual: Amizade Colorida (friends with benefits) and Encontro Adulto (adult hookups).
Because Coimbra empties out in summer and during exam periods, regular residents often widen their search area or keep a serious site running alongside the free apps.
Where Coimbra socialises
The Praça da República area, just below the university, is the traditional student meeting point, with bars and cafés that stay busy late into the night in term time. The steep streets of the Alta, the old upper town, and the Baixa below are lined with small restaurants and tascas.
The Mondego river shapes daytime life. The Parque Verde along the riverbank is popular for walks and runs, and in good weather people rent kayaks or sit by the water. The Botanical Garden of the university is another quiet spot for a first meeting.
The biggest moment of the year is the Queima das Fitas, the student celebration held each spring, with concerts and parades. Throughout the year, student associations, sports clubs and the Erasmus network organise plenty of events open to international students.
Etiquette and safety
Coimbra is traditional and close-knit. Many people know each other through faculties and student houses, so discretion is appreciated. If you are invited to hear Coimbra fado, listen quietly: applause is often replaced by clearing your throat or a respectful silence. Meet first in a public place, tell a friend where you are going and never transfer money to someone you met online.
