Ostrava at a glance
Ostrava, in the north-east of the country, grew on coal and steel, and that heritage is still everywhere. The former ironworks of Dolní Vítkovice have been turned into a cultural area with concert halls, a science centre and exhibition spaces, and the city has worked hard to shake off its grey reputation. Today it is the centre of the Moravian-Silesian Region, close to both the Polish and Slovak borders, with a down-to-earth population that is known for being direct and friendly.
The international community is smaller than in Prague or Brno, so English speakers here are often engineers, teachers, students or people who came for work in the region’s industry and logistics. VŠB – Technical University of Ostrava and the University of Ostrava bring students to the city, including international students.
Dating sites and apps for Ostrava
Because Ostrava’s English-speaking circle is small, language matters even more than elsewhere. The free apps are your English-friendly option; the dating sites are where you meet locals.
Tinder, Bumble and Badoo all have an English interface and free chat once you match. Badoo is especially well known outside Prague, and in Ostrava many people use it alongside Tinder. Widen your search radius to include nearby towns such as Havířov, Frýdek-Místek and Opava to see more profiles.
The services in our Czech Republic ranking are Czech-language and aimed at Czech singles. If you are older or want something serious, they are worth the effort of a translated interface:
- Over 50: Singles50, the top site in our Czech ranking, and for over-60s, 60sLove.
- 40 and over: 40smeet.
- Long-term relationship: eDarling or be2, both based on a personality test.
- Something casual: Přátelství s výhodami or NaughtyCharm.
You can join, create a profile and look around for free; messaging requires a paid plan.
Stodolní and beyond: where to go
Stodolní Street is Ostrava’s famous bar street, a concentrated stretch of pubs, clubs and late-night venues that fills up at weekends. It is loud and fun, but not ideal for a first conversation. For a calmer evening, the cafés and bars around Masarykovo náměstí, the main square, and in the centre of Moravská Ostrava work better.
Dolní Vítkovice is worth a visit on a date: you can walk around the industrial structures, and the Bolt Tower on top of the old blast furnace offers views over the city. Komenského sady is the central park for a walk, and the Beskydy mountains are close enough for a weekend hike, which is how many locals spend their free time.
In July, the long-running Colours of Ostrava music festival in Dolní Vítkovice brings in a large international crowd, and it is one of the few times of the year the city feels truly cosmopolitan.
Tips for English speakers
- Ostrava people tend to be straightforward and unpretentious: be yourself and skip the small talk.
- Learn a few phrases of Czech; in a smaller expat community the effort is noticed and appreciated.
- Meet in public places for the first date and keep your address private until you know someone.
- Never send money to a match, however convincing the reason.
